Program Stipend
This workshop takes place in a remote area of Montana where tourism is intensive and lodging options are limited. The workshop will be held at the North Yellowstone Lodge which is optimal for the number of participants and the planned workshops sessions, but it is 10 miles from the town of Gardiner which hosts motels and restaurants. Moreover, the evening meal is part of the curricular program (featuring Indigenous foods and the opportunity for participants to learn about their preparation), and other workshop events will occur during meals. Therefore, we urge all participants to sign up for housing and meals at the lodge, the costs of which will be deducted from the NEH-allotted $1300 stipend.
The costs of housing in the Lodge are $74/night for a single room and $41/night for a multi-bed shared room (note that single rooms have been assigned to accepted participants who requested a single room - in order by date/time of our receipt of your confirmed offer, due by April 14). The cost of camping on Lodge grounds (including use of Lodge bathrooms) is $20/night. The cost of all meals for the week is $265 (not significantly different than if you drove to Gardiner to take all meals at a restaurant).
With these considerations, participants who participate in the planned housing and meals will receive a stipend as follows (the total in each case is considered taxable income):
$1300 – $265 – $444 for a single room = $591
$1300 - $265 – $246 for a multi-room = $789
$1300 – $265 - $120 for camping = $915
If a participant is obliged through special circumstances to depart before the end of the program, they will receive a pro-rated stipend to reflect that absence.
